About My Project

In 2021, the International Diabetes Foundation estimated that approximately 716,000 Ugandans had diabetes mellitus (DM), and of those, approximately 89% were not receiving treatment or aware of their condition. This has led to patients developing critical complications that could have been prevented with proper screening/monitoring.

My goal is to identify the barriers the Batwa people of Uganda face in terms of screening for/management of DM and assess the implications for the lack of DM treatment. I am hoping for the opportunity to learn how physicians practicing in resource limited and remote areas are managing their DM patients and how have they been working to overcome set barriers in order to promote diabetes education, prevention and control.
