About My Project

I'm traveling to Berlin to study community-based DJ and EDM training programs for underrepresented voices in dance music, in order to further my research and organizing around accessibility, diversity, and community in the underground music scene in Providence. I’m a DJ who plays around Providence, and I’ve worked with a lot of local performers, bookers, and venue owners/workers here. This past summer, I worked on a collaborative community research project on accessibility and diversity in the local dance music scene, including a few dozen interviews and venue visits, and a benefit showcase for emerging local musicians. One of the major takeaways from that research was the massive gap between growing interest in dance music and the resources/support available for new performers. However, since the scene is so small in Providence, there are few developed models for change and community-building in dance music to learn from. The only way to counter structural inequality in the arts is by building organizational capacity and inclusive programming. I turn towards Berlin since it’s one of the only EDM/DJ scenes big enough to have active and successful diversity-based incubators and community access programming, and in-person research there is the best way to imagine (and enact) how these necessary programs could work here in Providence.
