About My Project

This project aims to create a Health Education Continuum with the goal of preparing students from Montana's Fort Peck Reservation to become healthcare professionals who serve their Native American communities. The first step in this process is designed to inspire and prepare seven-graders at the middle school in Poplar, Montana to consider and pursue careers in medicine and the allied health professions, ultimately addressing the significant healthcare disparities in this Native American community on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation. At the moment, this community is experiencing a mental health crisis, with one of the highest suicide rates in the country and an average life expectancy of 52 years. An Edward Guiliano Fellowship Award would enable a site visit to Poplar, Montana, as well as face-to-face meetings with Jacob "Buck" Turcotte, a local seventh-grade English teacher, to plan our Health Education Continuum initiative. Buck is a change agent in his community, and he has been recognized for his innovative educational initiatives that aim to fulfill his state's mandate of Indian Education for All.
