About My Project

I will be traveling to New Zealand to research the ritual of Haka and learn of the ways in which it—an indigenous practice—has become representative of a broader national identity. By speaking with New Zealand natives and observing renditions of the dance, I hope to learn of the ways in which it has been passed down and the ways in which non-indigenous people have been allowed to carry on the practice. In doing so, I hope to learn of how this social and political phenomenon may be demonstrative of an inclusive approach to cultural preservation and how other cultures may be able to learn from New Zealand’s indigenous stewardship to history and heritage.
